Dumaguete City is known for the best place to retire in the Philippines. This gets me curious why it is dubbed as that. After my Masskara Festival trip in Bacolod City, I went to Dumaguete to check out what is in store for me.
I didn't know that Buglasan Festival is celebrated a week after Masskara. I take this opportunity to explore Dumaguete!

Buglasan Festival in Dumaguete City is known as the festivals of festivals in Negros Oriental. The parade of colors is the summary of all festivals in Negros Oriental. This year the festival is celebrated from October 17-26, 2014.
How to get there
Dumaguete City is accessible via Dumaguete Airport. There are flights from Manila and Cebu via major airlines in the Philippines. You can also do a land trip via Cebu (5 hours) or Bacolod City (7 hours.)
Highlights of the Festival
Street dancing competition is an annual event. Most of the cities and municipalities of Negros Oriental participates in the said event. It features each place's culture and festival.

Negros Oriental's culture is more on the spanish inspired dances such as folk dance and costumes such as barongs and baro't saya.
The provincial capitol's ground is also occupied by a big bazaar. Food, souvenirs and some cultural artworks are exhibited here.
During the Festivals
Food trip is a must while touring Dumaguete City. Cheap food finds are all over the town. A must try is Sans Rival Bistro found in Boulevard. They offer sweet and luscious Silvanas (15php per piece) and Sans Rival (28php per slice) that you could not resist.

Recommended place to stay
There are a lot of cheap accommodation in Dumaguete City. I checked-in at Gabby's Bed and Breakfast at Claytown. They've got room for one with single bed, A/C, Cable TV, complimentary breakfast, shower and toilet for only Php600/night.

This laid-back university town is a truly a place of gentle people. Most of the landmarks, restaurants, mall and other places of interest is just minutes away. There are also a lot of foreigners settled here for a living.
Dumaguete is a great place to retire. This town sets it full potential being the gentle city of the Visayas.
